Although India, (as so many other countries in Asia) claims to be 100% grid connected, there are regions that receive irregular/poor quality grid power. These consumers are often the rural poor, to whom, the power distribution companies (DISCOMs) claim it is unviable to supply power to- as these are low paying consumers. A sustainable solution that is a win for both is the ideal way to go. There is a similar problem that consumers in West Africa for e.g.in Nigeria, face but there is another path being taken to address the issue- the use of diesel gensets. Carbon Trust has conducted research to look at the problem and possible solutions.
